SVC is an inclusive organisation that aims to support a diverse range of individuals to volunteer. The SVC staff team have undertaken training in Unconscious Bias and Discrimination and recently attended Racism Awareness, Hate Crime & Discrimination training with Race Equality First. We will be trained in First Steps to LGBT Inclusion and Intro to Allyship by Stonewall soon. As a charity we pledge to continue to educate ourselves and our community on equality, diversity and inclusion.
While the SVC volunteer application process is more competitive this year due to having fewer volunteering opportunities available, we would like to encourage anyone to apply! SVC are looking for a diverse range of enthusiastic volunteers who value the opportunity to support vulnerable people. Please note, applicants do not require any prior experience. SVC staff, Board of Trustees and Lead Volunteers will do their best to support volunteers throughout their time volunteering with SVC. To find out more about SVC please have a look at Our Mission and Our Values on our website.
By deciding to volunteer you will be improving your local community and gaining new skills and experience for yourself. The information below outlines our current recruitment process, however please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions or concerns.
** See our FAQ page for more information if you are an international volunteer, or you are worried about the outcome of your DBS check. **
Choose your project
Have a look at our project lists to help you decide which project would interest or develop you! You are allowed to apply to do more than one project, but please consider the time commitment involved.
Complete an Application Form
Following the COVID-19 pandemic we have ceased the majority of our face to face volunteering activities, and have established many new ways to support our beneficiaries. Many of whom have been advised to self-isolate for their own safety. We are keen to provide our beneficiaries with as much support as possible and try to combat feelings of isolation and loneliness.
There are lots of ways of to get involved, even if you have limited availability, don’t live in the local area or are self-isolating too.
Please tell us a bit more about you, and why you would like to volunteer by completing the SVC application form. Please note that some projects require us to gather more “project specific” information about you, therefore there might be a different application process for that project. If you visit the specific Project on our website it will give you information regarding how to apply for each individual project. For example, our sewing project, and our Fitzalan High School Tuition Project have their own unique application form.
Most of our projects will require applicants to undertake a short informal interview with one of the SVC staff team. This is to ensure that the project is the right match for you. Unfortunately due to Covid-19, we have fewer volunteering roles available and therefore your answers on the application form/s will determine whether you are invited to interview.
Complete a DBS check
The majority of SVC projects require you to have a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Please click here to look at the official government web page for the most up to date information on what evidence you need to provide.
We will send you a DBS pack in the post to complete. When we receive your completed form, we will organise a video call to view three forms of your ID. Prior to the meeting, we will give you guidance regarding the ID we need to see. In exceptional circumstances, we can organise this meeting in the SVC office. If you require an appointment, please contact us to discuss (02921 676780).
International volunteers: Unfortunately DBS checks only cover the UK, so unless you have been resident in the UK for 5 years or more, we will also need a criminal record check from your home country to account for the periods of time not covered by a UK DBS check. You can find more information about how to request a criminal record check from overseas here.
Return your documents
Your DBS pack will be posted to the address you use in your online application form. A return stamped address envelope will be included, please ensure you return your completed DBS application in the envelope provide, as soon as possible.
Following the DBS meeting where we check your ID, we will process your DBS. Your DBS certificate will be sent back to the home address you use when completing the DBS form. When your DBS certificate arrives, please email SVC with a scanned copy of your DBS - you will not be able to start volunteering until the DBS check has been received by the SVC team.
Once all the steps above are completed you are ready to start volunteering! Your Lead Volunteers or SVC staff member will be in touch with you to discuss inductions and training.
