Protecting Our Planet

At SVC we are always striving to be more sustainable and reduce our carbon footprint, whether it’s through the projects we deliver, or the way we undertake our services. Here’s what we are currently working towards...

  1. We are striving to use LED lighting in all of our offices. LED is one of the most energy efficient forms of lighting a business can use, other than natural daylight of course. LED bulbs use approximately 15 times less electricity than halogen lighting, significantly reducing SVC’s carbon footprint.
  2. SVC is aiming for a paperless future. It’s hard, because there are many examples where we need to use a paper copy of something. However, where possible, we favour digital files and documents. We are aiming to decrease the mounds of paperwork wherever possible.
  3. Transport is a big one for us. As a staff team we each cycle, walk or catch public transport to, and from, work. We also encourage all of our volunteers to do the same. Where volunteers, or staff, are attending meetings far away, we car share. Aiming to decrease the emissions of nasty CO2s into the atmosphere.
  4. Switch off appliances at the end of the day – it’s a must!
  5. For SVC appliances which are used intermittently, such as photocopiers, we enable the ‘power save’ mode, which means they drain less energy when not in use.
  6. Unplug phone chargers when not in use. Again, it’s simple and it saves.
  7. Using a microwave in the SVC kitchen, by heating and cooking food in a microwave is more energy efficient than cooking in an oven.
  8. Meat free day – once a week the SVC team collectively engages in an eco-friendly team effort of not eating meat.
  9. Partnership work- We work with partners such as South Wales Police, and Cardiff Council, with the aim to make South Wales a greener and safer community.
  10. Recycled office furniture – at SVC the vast majority of our furniture was donated or found on local second hand websites.
  11. Scrap paper –We have a box of scrap paper in the office, which is used by staff as note paper!
  12. We recycle office waste using Cardiff Council’s green bag guidelines.
  13. We also recycle waste with TerraCyle! TerraCycle is an innovative recycling company that has become a global leader in recycling typically hard-to-recycle waste.
