There are many ways available for you to travel to and from your chosen project. The most common way will be to use public transport and some projects are even within walking distance.

SVC has 2 cars available for volunteering purposes which must be booked out in advance with the SVC team. Discuss with a member of staff if you will be able to use the cars for volunteering on your project and how you can sign up.

If you have your own car and wish to use it for volunteering purposes then this is fine but please be aware that you will need to register your car with SVC in order to claim back expenses incurred. You can chat to a member of staff about what you will need to do to register.

All travel expenses will be reimbursed by the SVC team, whether from public transport or from filling the fuel tank in your own or SVC’s cars. For travel costs to and from your place of volunteering, the maximum SVC is able to reimburse is £4.90 per session. There are additional allowances for volunteers on the Home and Away project due to travel whilst out on an activity (please speak to your SVC Project Coordinator for further details). Additionally, if you are driving an SVC vehicle and have filled up the petrol tank, then please retain this receipt and you will receive a full refund. You must present receipts or tickets in order to claim back your money. If, for any reason, you do not have your original receipt or ticket for your travel expenses and you want to claim your money back, you must submit a statement in writing and the SVC Manager will consider your case.

You will be informed before you begin volunteering what the usual and agreed upon mode of transport is for your chosen project and you can find out on the project pages of this website. (If you are unsure discuss this with your Lead Volunteer or a member of staff.) You may feel that another mode of transport is more suitable or cost-effective. If you decide to use another mode of transport to travel to/from your project you MUST clear this with the SVC Manager before you do so in order to claim back your expenses. If this is not done before you travel or the SVC Manager deems it unnecessary for you to change your mode of transport you will not be entitled to claim back your expenses. We will generally only reimburse for the most cost-effective mode of transport for you project.
