SVC’s Young Carers Club works with children in Cardiff who are classed as young carers, meaning they have either a parent or sibling with some form of disability and may be required to provide some of the support and care.
The Young Carers Club has changed format due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Instead of our monthly activity trips for our Kids and Teens groups, we are now running group activity sessions every three weeks over video call for our young carers to engage with. SVC’s group activities involve things such as: quizzes, dance sessions, escape rooms, virtual zoo or landmark trips, cooking/baking sessions, film sessions, online games sessions, etc.
The aim of the project is to provide a variety of sessions for our young carers who may otherwise not get the opportunity to engage with such activities during this time. It also give them the chance to have a break from the stresses that they face at home and allows them socialise with other young carers in a similar situation to them.
This is an amazing opportunity for those seeking for experience with vulnerable people and for those looking to work as part of a team, with fellow volunteers and young carers alike. The project is of huge benefit to volunteers, in terms of gaining transferable skills and experience. The skills that volunteers will achieve include interpersonal skills, teamwork, problem solving and empathy, just to name a few. This project might be of particular interest to anyone pursuing a career in Support Work, Social Work or Mental Health.
Please note: this is a digital opportunity and volunteers will not be visiting the young carers due to COVID-19.
