SVC Trustee Interviews

Name:

Gavin Hawkey

Position on the Board of Trustees:

General Trustee

What initially drew you to applying for the SVC Board of Trustees?

I joined the SVC board of trustees after attending a trustee recruitment event hosted by Cardiff Third Sector Council. I was actually there to recruit potential trustees for the charity I work for, the Cardiff City FC Foundation, but after hearing about the work of SVC, I knew I wanted to be part of the SVC movement.

How have you found your time on the SVC Board of Trustees?

Really enjoyable. SVC has an incredible history and there’s a special spirit amongst the board, staff and team of volunteers.

Why do you think people should apply to be on the Board of Trustees?

All sorts of reasons such as developing new skills, broadening your experience base, making you more employable, giving something back to the community and simply because it’s such an enjoyable and memorable experience.

What would be your advice to anyone wanting to apply for the Board?

It’s a fantastic experience. Becoming a trustee can seem a bit daunting at first but it really isn’t. Chat to the team or one of the trustees if you have any questions – they’re always happy to help.

What’s been your favourite moment/memory of your time on the Board of Trustees?

Tough call. Either the Duck Race in Bute Park or hearing from beneficiaries at our AGM.

Any final words you’d like to give people thinking of applying?

Go for it. I wish I’d done this years ago.
