Trustee Week: Karen

I've often thought that the word trustee feels inadequate to describe what the role is really about. How can one word sum up such a diverse range of experiences and fantastic opportunities?

I'd also hugely underestimated what I would learn from being a trustee. I have a responsible day job, I work for Cardiff University in HR as an Organisational Development Manager and I also chair our LGBT+ Staff and Postgraduate network, so I niavely thought that there wasn't much being a trustee could teach me. I couldn't have been more wrong.

I've learnt about the importance of the legal aspects of the role, reaffirmed my belief that you achieve the best things by working as a cohesive board and I've made some of the best friends I could hope for. Then there is the absolute joy of seeing what our volunteers achieve and the difference they make. We have such an impact on our local community that it makes me think again about the word trustee. In essence being on the board means that trust is placed in me to do the right thing at the right time to ensure we can keep delivering all the good we do.

It's the best decision I've ever made!
