Our Vision

No Woman should have to face birth alone.

Who do we support?

The Birth Partner project provides volunteer birth partners to support women and birthing people seeking sanctuary who would otherwise face pregnancy, birth and early motherhood alone.

How you can help:

We are currently looking to recruit volunteer Birth Partners. You would be part of a 3- or 4-person team providing emotional support, comfort measures and a positive, nurturing presence during the late antenatal period, labour and birth and 8 weeks postnatally.

No specific previous qualifications or experience are necessary, just a willingness to get involved, bring empathy, kindness as well as a positive and calm approach. This is an extremely rewarding role, but it also requires you to carefully review the time commitment involved, be non-judgmental and a good team player with excellent communication skills. Please, check out our website for more information on our charity and the work we do: The Birth Partner Project.

Time Commitment: Time commitment to support one service user usually covers a 3–4-month period. We request that volunteer birth partners are available for fairly regular on-call shifts during a period of 4-5 weeks around the estimated due date of the mama. We also ask that anyone applying for this role does so with the expectation of being available for at least 18 months after the training (typically supporting 1 mama every 6 months).

Who can volunteer: Anyone interested aged 18+ and female.

Training and support involved: You will receive training to give you the skills to be a good birth partner, this will include sessions on the birth physiology and supporting the mamas when they are in labour, trauma-informed care, understanding the asylum process, safeguarding, etc. You will also receive guidance from the volunteer coordinators when volunteering for The Birth Partner Project.

Why volunteer:

Make a difference: you will be supporting women and birthing people who would otherwise face pregnancy, birth and early motherhood alone.

Meet new people and be part of a community: Connect with the women and birthing people you support as well as with the other volunteers and the wider community.

Be part of something special: Join a meaningful and growing charity.

Location: Cardiff (and immediate surrounding areas).

How to apply: Please, send your CV and a cover letter outlining the reasons why you feel the volunteer birth partner role would suit you to areatha@birthpartnerproject.org and manon@birthpartnerproject.org. The next round of training will take place on the following dates (in-person attendance is mandatory):

  • Friday 23rd of January 2026
  • Saturday 24th of January 2026
  • Saturday 31st of January 2026
  • Friday 6th of February 2026

Please, still feel free to get in touch if you can’t make these dates but are interested to be considered in the next training cohort.
